Pet Photography

Meet Autum

Recently a client hired me to capture images of their beloved dog that had recently been diagnosed with cancer. I couldn’t say no to this assignment; I knew the stakes.

Meet Autumn a 9 ½-year-old English Pointer. She is a sweet and loving dog that adores her owner. She had just started chemotherapy and the chemo wears her out but on this day she had a lot of energy.

Autumn had us following her through the tall grasses and wildflowers while she showed us her best hunting skills.

She elegantly posed for me and at the end of the session happily gave me lots of kisses.

While I was there my client asked if I would take a few photographs of their desert tortoises, Mom, Dad, and their three babies. First time taking tortoise pictures, it was challenging. You would never believe how fast a desert tortoise moves when you’re trying to capture pictures of them!

Pet photography is not something I have done a lot of except for my own pets. Many of you may not know this about me, after graduating high school I went to college and earned my associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology. I then went on to work as a vet tech for over 20 years. I also owned a very successful pet sitting business for over 12 years. With my love for animals and photography, pet photography is almost a natural thing for me to do.

If you’ve got a pet, chances are you have countless pictures of them stored on your phone or computer. Like children, pets are constantly doing something that’s photo-worthy—even when they’re being naughty. But, quantity doesn’t always equal quality. Often, it’s better to have a small collection of incredible pet photographs that artfully capture the true essence of your furry friend. Going beyond a smartphone camera, photographers have elevated the subject matter with their professional equipment and above all, a keen eye. Paired with creative thinking, these images of animals become unforgettable.

There are many challenges to pet photography. Animals are unpredictable, they are fast and move at a moment’s notice. A pet photographer needs to be able to capture the right look or expression. Knowing animal behavior and having great photography skills really helps.

If you have ever considered getting professional pet portraits here is a few reasons why you should.

  • Memories – this is a tough one, but our pets won’t be around forever. The memories of our beloved pets are priceless and having professional photographs done is something I recommend so you will always have the beautiful memory of your pet.
  • You want to be in the photos too! You are always taking pictures of your pet but find it hard to capture the perfect selfie. Having a professional capture, the relationship between the two of you and the love you share is priceless.
  • Pet photography is an art form. A professional pet photographer will use his/her creativity to capture your pet in unique situations or poses while capturing candid moments with you and your pet. The photographer might specialize in formal portraits with a backdrop along with beautiful lighting or do lifestyle photography that tells a story about your cherished pet. All of these require the skill and patience of a professional pet photographer and one that truly cares for you and your pet.
